A great HipHop song can sometimes be compared to a dope pair of sneakers. Some songs, just like some sneakers are timeless!! Ask the real HipHop heads, the ball players and the sneaker collectors; they would definitely attest that the marriage between HipHop and Basketball is brought closer together by fresh kicks and dope verses!!! Some players, just like rappers, have a bigger effect than others where some are just there to help us measure the depth between the best and the rest.
One name that comes up the most in conversations relating to HipHop and Basketball has to be Allen Iverson. AI is arguably the most famous player to ever come out of Georgetown University. This does not take away from legends such as Dikembe Mutombo, Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning; but AI’s impact on the game definitely solidified the bridge between HipHop and Hoops. You may even say, he modernised the crossover between the two.
Some of his memories running for the Hoyas were recorded while wearing the Concords, the classic Air Jordan 11 which are easily in the top 5 greatest basketball shoes ever. So when the AJ XI Georgetown low was released back in April as part of the brand’s 30th year Anniversary, it looked more like a rather subliminal shout-out to AI. HipHop & Basketball have given many shout-outs to Iverson, even Jay did it on the Prelude to Kingdom Come “…Before The Answer was a 3 / I was down in Georgetown with’ a Hoya chick, lawyer chick…”
We have seen a number of great re-releases of Air Jordan XI-retro’s over the years which have solidified their place as Jumpman’s best model ever. Recent releases have included the “Wolf Greys”, “Gamma Blue”, “Pantone”, “Legend Blue” and “Blackout Bred”.
So whether or not it was intentional. Whether or not somebody at Jordan Brand was thinking about Iverson when they came up with the Georgetown colourway. Whether or not you are a Jordan loyalist who may already have a couple of 11’s to your name. The Air Jordan Georgetown 11 low is worthy of any collection.
Shouts to @PerfectGentsa who rocked these with a suit during 1 of the telecasts for Supersport for the Basketball National League!! Special shootout to All Star Tsakane Ngobeni of the Duzi Royals who has also taken to the court with a pair of “Concords”.
Culture over everything!!
